About the Program

Dr. Brenda M. Greene and Angela P. Dodson discuss Dodson’s historical rendition of Remember the Ladies: Celebrating Those Who Fought for Freedom at the Ballot Box (Center Street, 2017).  Dodson presents a moving account of the women’s suffrage movement.  The narrative is disturbing at times and is a story that needs to be told. During these days of the “Me Too” movement, it is extremely important to remember the legacy of the women who persisted and defied many obstacles as they fought for the right to vote. Through these pages, readers bear witness to the letters and speeches of women such as Abigail Adams, Sarah Grimké, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. We learn of the ways in which Frederick Douglass impacted the Movement. Dodson discusses the interrelationship between the abolitionist movement and the women’s suffrage movement and outlines the social and political factors that impacted this Movement.  This is an important book that has a message for all ages and diverse audiences.
